Lightning hits French president's plane, none hurt

Air Jordan Retro Shoes On SalePARIS (AP) — Socialist Francois Hollande took over as France's president Tuesday and jetted off to Berlin hours later for talks on Europe's debt crisis — only to have his plane struck by lightning. No one was hurt.
It was a startling beginning for a man who promised to be a more "normal" president, and less flashy than his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy, who was ousted by voters after a single term for his handling of a stagnant economy plagued by joblessness.www.shoesjordansforcheap.com
After a succession of rain-drenched and pomp-filled ceremonial inauguration events, Hollande took off in a Falcon 7X aircraft for Berlin. The plane was hit by lightning shortly afterward, and returned to the Villacoublay air base outside Paris as a precaution for inspection, Defense Ministry spokesman Gerard Gachet said.
Defense officials say the president and his entourage were transferred to another aircraft, a Falcon 900, and left shortly thereafter. That made Hollande about an hour and a half late for his first meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Hollande was following a postwar custom for new French leaders to reach out to their German counterparts to solidify European unity. Right before leaving for Berlin, Hollande named a moderate, German-friendly member of his Socialist party, Jean-Marc Ayrault, as his prime minster.
The new French president and Merkel are in different camps when it comes to solving Europe's debt crisis. While new figures Tuesday showed the 17-nation eurozone has avoided a new recession, thanks largely to Germany, political turmoil in Greece was reviving fears about the fate of their shared euro currency.
Hollande, elected May 6 as France's first Socialist president since Francois Mitterrand left office in 1995, rode to the presidency on a wave of resurgent leftist sentiment amid Europe's debt woes and protests against capitalism around the world.Air Jordan Womens sale online
The 57-year-old displayed his populist touch in between Tuesday's ceremonies, stopping for handshakes — and even a kiss — with adoring fans.
Arriving Tuesday morning at the 18th-century Elysee Palace, the traditional residence of French presidents, Hollande was greeted by Sarkozy on the red-carpeted steps. The two held a 40-minute private meeting that is traditionally the moment when the outgoing president hands over the codes to France's nuclear arsenal.
Hollande was declared president after the head of the constitutional court read out the final results of the May 6 election.new air jordan fusion shoes
The new president immediately acknowledged the challenges he inherits: "a massive debt, weak growth, high unemployment, degraded competitiveness, and a Europe that is struggling to come out of crisis."
In his speech, Hollande promised to fight financial speculation and "open a new path" in Europe. He has pushed back against a European budget-cutting pact championed by Merkel and Sarkozy.
"To overcome the crisis that is hitting it, Europe needs plans. It needs solidarity. It needs growth. To our partners, I will propose a new pact that will tie the necessary reduction of public debt with the indispensable stimulus of the economy," he said.
Hollande also pledged to bring "dignity and simplicity" to the presidential role — something voters felt that Sarkozy did not always do.
The French mood is glum. Many voters looked to the inauguration as a rare moment of national pride and to Hollande's presidency as a new opportunity to make things better.
Earlier Tuesday, the state statistics agency released new figures showing that the French economy had failed to grow in the first quarter. Some economists predict a contraction ahead, which would complicate Hollande's promises to rein in the deficit.
World markets and other European leaders will be watching closely to see whether and how Hollande follows through on his campaign promises, such as pulling French troops out of Afghanistan, freezing gasoline prices and hiking taxes on the rich. Observers expect that once he settles into the presidency, he's likely to fall back into the moderate consensus-building that has characterized his career.
Crucial to Hollande's presidency will be his relationship with Merkel, the German chancellor.
The announcement of lawmaker Ayrault (ay-ROW) as prime minister may well prove an advantage for this relationship. Ayrault, who leads the Socialists in Parliament, is a German speaker and a former teacher of the language of Goethe. The 62-year-old Ayrault and Hollande are said to be very close.
After the Berlin visit, Hollande heads later this week to the United States to meet President Barack Obama and attend summits of the Group of Eight and NATO.
In the ceremony Tuesday, Hollande received the insignia of the Grand Croix from the hands of Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, who heads the prestigious Legion of Honor, and the necklace of the Great Master of the Order of the Legion of Honor. Each linked medallion of the necklace bears the name of a president, with Hollande's name recently added.
Hollande shook hands with many of the hundreds at the ceremony, then reviewed troops in the palace gardens. Following tradition, 21 shots were fired from cannons at the Invalides, a domed complex on the opposite side of the Seine River that holds Napoleon's tomb.
Rain started pouring down on the famed Champs-Elysees avenue as Hollande rode up its center, standing in the sunroof of his hybrid Citroen DS5, trailed by dozens of Republican Guardsmen on horseback and motorcycle. His suit was visibly drenched within moments. He then headed for the Arc de Triomphe, and its monument to the unknown soldier.
His second presidential speech of the day focused on education, as he pledged to create 60,000 new teaching jobs in the aftermath of cuts Sarkozy had made.
Hollande, who has never been married, was joined for the Elysee ceremonies and in his motorcade car Tuesday by his girlfriend, journalist Valerie Trierweiler.
Hollande's former partner and the mother of his four children, Segolene Royal, joined him later Tuesday in a ceremony at Paris City Hall. Royal, a prominent Socialist politician, was runner-up to Sarkozy in the 2007 election. She is angling for a top job under Hollande's presidency.
Hollande's first presidential meal reflected relative modesty, at least by French culinary standards: lobster and citrus terrine, cote de boeuf, and strawberry macaron cookies for dessert.
Sarkozy left the palace hand-in-hand with wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, had a last handshake on the palace steps with Hollande, then was driven away. Former staff members gathered in the palace courtyard applauded loudly as Sarkozy left, and fans at the Elysee gates waved signs reading "Nicolas, merci!"

U.S. may freeze assets to boost Yemen transition: report

New Jordans 2012 For SaleWASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to give the Treasury Department authority on Wednesday to freeze U.S.-based assets of anyone who "obstructs" implementation of the Washington-backed political transition in Yemen, the Washington Post reported late on Tuesday.
Administration officials said an executive order to be issued by Obama would also apply to U.S. citizens who engaged in activity deemed a threat to Yemen's security or political stability, the report said.
The order does not include a list of names or organizations already determined to be in violation, the report said. One official said it was designed as a "deterrent" to "make clear to those who are even thinking of spoiling the transition" to think again, the Post reported.Kids Jordan Shoes sale
The official was authorized to discuss the order on the condition of anonymity, the report said.
Washington has stepped up its drone attacks in Yemen since President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took office in February amid an al Qaeda-fuelled rebellion in the south, and the Pentagon said this week it had recently resumed sending military trainers into the Gulf Arab country.www.shoesjordans23.com
Washington backed a power transfer plan that made Hadi the successor to President Ali Abdullah Saleh after a year of mass protests which coincided with a split in the army that threatened to erupt into civil war.

New Mexico suspends two officials over prostitution payment scan

Air Jordan Retro Shoes On SaleSANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) - New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez's administration said it suspended two finance officials this week in an embattled city where a state audit found public money had paid for prostitutes for two other city officials.www.jordansretroforsale.com
The suspensions of Sunland Park Finance Director Helen Gonzalez and Purchasing Agent Neryza Rivera follow an auditor's report that found vast mismanagement of funds, including the payments for prostitutes for former mayor pro tem Daniel Salinas and another city official.
"The extraordinary level of financial mismanagement in Sunland Park is unacceptable," Martinez said in a statement. "Protecting public funds will be our highest priority."
Sunland Park has been embroiled in controversy since Salinas, who was elected mayor in March, was blocked by the state supreme court from being sworn in - or even setting foot in city hall - because of charges he tried to extort his opponent in the mayoral race with a tape showing the opponent receiving a lap dance from a stripper.
Salinas, 28, remains in jail, and last month the city council chose 24-year-old Javier Perea, a business student who used to sell diamonds in a mall, as the town's new mayor.
But the state attorney general ruled later that month that the election was void, and Perea resigned.
Meanwhile, the state auditor found that more than $42,000 in public funds from the city's Border Crossing Fund paid for prostitutes for Salinas and the city's former public information officer, and also paid for a private investigator to film a video used to extort Salinas' mayoral opponent.Shopping Results for Kids Jordan Shoes
Other findings included improperly forgiving some $200,000 in utility bills for residential customers and violating a competitive bidding requirement in the awarding of a $2.4 million contract to EnviroSystems Management Consultants Inc.Save on Nike Women's Running Shoes
The suspended officials will receive a hearing, Clifford said, adding that suspensions of additional city officials were possible.Fusion Shoes Jordan Sale
"Our goal is to establish a properly functioning system of checks and balances to prevent future waste, abuse, and mismanagement of public funds," State Finance Secretary Thomas Clifford said in a statement on Monday.

Two men accused of confining illegals without food, water

Nike Air Jordan 6MCALLEN, Texas (Reuters) - A federal grand jury has indicted two Mexican nationals on charges they confined dozens of illegal immigrants in houses along the South Texas border with Mexico, some locked inside without food or water for days.
A Honduran man who was among a those confined in one of the "stash houses" told a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent the man in charge would greet each newcomer by saying, "Welcome to Hell," according to court documents.Womens Nike Air Shoes
The indictment, returned on Tuesday, charges Vicente Ortiz Soto and Marcial Salas Gardunio, both 24, with conspiracy to harbor aliens and alien harboring, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a statement.
It was Salas who allegedly welcomed new arrivals to "Hell," according to a federal criminal complaint that preceded the indictment.
Police in Edinburg, Texas, discovered 115 undocumented immigrants crammed inside a cluster of three houses on May 2.Shoes Jordan Fusions Sale
The officers were responding to an emergency call from a person claiming that he and dozens of other illegal border-crossers had been locked inside without food or water, the criminal complaint said.
Some of the migrants said they were given nothing to eat or drink for at least three days, and several required medical treatment for dehydration, according to police and court documents.
One of the houses had bars over the windows and had been locked shut with chains and padlocks, police said.new jordan shoes
Ortiz and Salas were taken into custody at the scene, and both remain jailed without bond. If convicted, each man faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count in the indictment.
The criminal complaint accuses Ortiz of driving immigrants to the stash houses from the border and selling them snacks. It said Salas told federal agents Ortiz paid him $500 a week to help smuggle, track and guard the migrants.jordan shoes for sale

Federer listening to his body on Rome participation

Kids Jordan ShoesRoger Federer and family landed in the Italian capital on Monday with the Swiss hoping to participate as scheduled in this week's Rome Masters.
But the newly-crowned world number two, who won a third Madrid title at the weekend over Tomas Berdych, said that he will be listening to his body to determine if he's feeling fit enough to make a second round start on Wednesday at the Foro Italico.
"Normally yes," the 30-year-old said of his chances of taking to the court as scheduled at an event which he has never won despite two finals.
"But we'll see how I feel over the next few days. I still have a couple of days to see how I feel and take it from there.
"It's been a tough week, the body feels it when you come back from six weeks. It does hurt a bit so I just have to make sure I make the right decision come Tuesday, Wednesday. I hope I can play."
Federer was temporarily luxuriating in his seventh title from 10 ATP starts dating to last autumn. The 16-time grand slam winner's 74th career title sent Rafael Nadal back to third on the ATP list, with Novak Djokovic still leading the chase.www.buy-retrojordans.com
Both of Federer's top rivals fell by the wayside on the controversial blue clay which sent them out early but did not disturb the steady Swiss as he won his fourth trophy of the season.
As a result, Federer climbed to second and is glad to be back as he won following a strategic six-week pause from late March.
"It's obviously surprising to me to come back and win the title straight away. I was worried about getting through the first one and not even thinking who was going to be my second round opponent," said Swiss.
"I was very realistic coming into this event. I guess I had forgotten that I have such a great record here in Madrid and guess drew from that.Jordan Fusion for sale
"That first match (winning a third-set tiebreak over Canadian Milos Raonic) round was key, just to stay in the tournament and give myself an opportunity and finally find some rhythm from the baseline.
"The next thing you know is that you're in the tournament and playing against someone you've beaten many times. Confidence is coming back; but it doesn't take much for me to get my confidence back especially at this point.cheap jordan for sale
"I've been playing so well for the past nine months. It's been a great spell and I couldn't be more happy right now coming off a break winning right way. It's always an ideal scenario for what's to come."
Federer has not looked back since losing a heartbreak US Open semi-final to Djokovic after holding two match points. The Swiss has a chance to regain the No. 1 ranking with standout showings in the upcoming week in either Paris or Wimbledon, according to ATP calculations.
On court at the Foro Italico, French 13th seed Gael Monfils advanced to the second round over Russian Alex Bogomolov 6-4, 6-1 while Fernando Verdasco, who sent Nadal out of Madrid, won as Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov quit after losing their opening set 6-0.
Australian Bernard Tomic, a first-round Madrid loser, beat Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In women's play, 13th-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic beat two-time finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 6-4, 6-3, German Julia Goerges beat Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3 and Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa defeated Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).

News Corp 3Q beats Street despite probe costs

Jordan Shoes For SaleLOS ANGELES (AP) — Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the global media conglomerate under fire for phone hacking and alleged bribery in Britain, posted a 47 percent increase in third-quarter net income thanks to strong performances at its U.S. pay TV networks and movie studio.www.shoesjordansforcheap.com
The results beat analyst expectations. The company also announced it would buy back another $6.1 billion worth of shares in the coming year — on top of the $3.9 billion worth it bought in the last 11 months — a move that should bolster News Corp.'s stock and assuage lingering fears that Murdoch might squander company cash on expensive acquisitions.
The company's shares rose 51 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $19.89 in after-hours trading.
News Corp.'s shares have traded at a discount to its media peers because of what investors view as its poor use of cash, which is generated mainly from pay TV networks such as Fox News and its broadcast TV stations. With its planned takeover of British Sky Broadcasting derailed by the hacking scandal, analysts welcomed the share buyback plan.
"It's comforting to see them buying back stock," said Lazard Capital analyst Barton Crockett. He added that the company "delivered much better earnings than I was looking for."
Net income in the three months to March 31 rose to $937 million, or 38 cents per share, from $639 million, or 24 cents per share, a year ago.Jordan Shoes
Excluding unusual items such as the $63 million in legal bills to deal with the ongoing investigation of its British newspaper unit, adjusted earnings came to 37 cents per share, beating the 31 cents expected by analysts polled by FactSet.
Revenue rose 2 percent to $8.40 billion, beating the $8.25 billion analysts expected.
Pay TV revenue rose 16 percent bolstered by rising fees from distributors at home and abroad and a 10 percent rise in U.S. ad revenue. Movies revenue rose 11 percent as films in various stages of release such as "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," ''The Descendants" and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" did better than standouts from last year's third quarter including "The A-Team," ''Knight and Day" and "Unstoppable."
News Corp. reiterated its forecast for its full-year adjusted operating profits to grow in the "low to mid-teen" percentages from the $4.98 billion posted nearly a year ago. Its fiscal year ends June 30. The company said, however, that its results are likely to be on the low end of the range because of a slowdown at the 20th Century Fox movie studio and weak ad markets at its international newspapers.
The forecast excludes scandal-related charges, which have come to $167 million for the first nine months of the fiscal year.
Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey repeated the company's defense of Murdoch, News Corp.'s founder, controlling shareholder and CEO who was blasted in a U.K. parliamentary committee report last week as being unfit to run a major international company.
"Both the board and I rebuff any notion that he is unfit to run this company," Carey said.
Murdoch, 81, was not present on the quarterly conference call.
The British hacking probe has forced News Corp. to postpone its bid to increase its 39 percent stake in BSkyB. The U.K. lawmakers' report raises questions about whether the U.K. communications regulator, OfCom, will find that BSkyB is not "fit and proper" to hold a British broadcasting license. That could force News Corp. to shed its stake, worth more than $7 billion.
Carey repeated the position that the company prefers to "either own and operate or monetize" businesses. In other words, News Corp. prefers to have a controlling stake in a business or sell it completely. However, he said there is no time frame for potentially divesting BSkyB.
"We feel comfortable staying the course with BSkyB for a long time," he said.

Ford to triple EcoBoost output in Europe by 2015

retro jordans for cheap(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co will more than triple European production of vehicles made with its turbocharged engine by 2015 as emission standards grow stricter in the region.
By 2015, Ford said, it expects to build 480,000 vehicles a year with its "EcoBoost" engine, which, according to the company, can provide up to a 15 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. In 2011, Ford built 141,000 vehicles with this engine.
Ford will also expand the number of models available with the engine to 10 from the current five by 2015.
The automaker has made fuel economy the focus of its vehicle strategy as oil prices rise, and U.S. and European standards for fuel economy and emissions tighten. The EcoBoost engine will play a key role in helping Ford meet those standards.www.jordansretroforsale.com
The European Union wants emissions from new cars to fall, on average, to 130 grams of CO2 per kilometer by 2015. That would be nearly a 20 percent reduction from the EU's 2006 target of 161.3 grams.
The automaker expects that by 2015, more than half of its cars sold in Europe will be equipped with the engine.Retro Jordans
In all, Ford expects to make 1.3 million European cars with EcoBoost from 2012 to 2015. More than half of them, 800,000, will be outfitted with a small 1.0-liter engine made in factories in Romania and Germany. Other options are a 1.6 liter variant and a 2.0 liter engine.Air Jordan Retro Shoes For Cheap
Last year, Ford lost $27 million in Europe, where car sales are declining in the face of rising unemployment and economic uncertainty. Ford expects to lose between $500 million and $600 million in Europe this year.

French first ladies: Bye Carla, bonjour Valerie

Nike Air Jordan Shoes ShopPARIS (AP) — Only in France. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the superstar model-turned-songstress with a freewheeling lifestyle, now hands the job of first lady to a twice-divorced journalist who's the first presidential partner to enter the Elysee Palace without a ring on her finger.
And as Valerie Trierweiler prepares for her new role alongside President-elect Francois Hollande, in the wings is the woman whose man she stole — Segolene Royal, the mother of Hollande's four children and a former presidential candidate now seeking her own seat of political power.
So what's happening in the land of French officialdom, where protocol and social niceties still count? Will Trierweiler's name be listed on formal invitations to presidential events, even though she's not his spouse?
It's the head of state who decides, so where's the problem?
Intrigue, love lost, love found and power struggles accompanied the new first couple on their journey to the presidency, which Hollande takes over from Nicolas Sarkozy on May 15. The Hollande-Trierweiler couple gave each other a big kiss on the mouth at the victory fete watched by cheering thousands at the Bastille.
FOLLOWING CARLA'S FOOTSTEPS
Bruni-Sarkozy, who married the outgoing president after he divorced his second wife while in office, adapted to the job of first lady like slipping into a silver slipper.
Past romantic adventures with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton faded into distant memory and she cultivated a low profile as France's "premiere dame," charming and disarming other heads of state.
Some think Trierweiler may do even better.www.jordansretroforcheap.com
"Valerie is perfect. She's so French," Paris-based fashion writer Rebecca Voight insisted. "It's what French women see in themselves. ... She kept a respectful distance from Hollande during the campaign and also had her career, which people respect."
Privilege describes the life, past and present, of Sarkozy's Italian-born wife, who comes from a wealthy Turin family. Trierweiler's roots are more humble. One of six children, she grew up in a modest neighborhood in Angers, in western France, then studied political science at the Sorbonne.
"I didn't choose to have a public life. I chose Francois," she said in an interview with Paris-Match in October. "But I will adapt."Cheap Jordan Shoes
THE VALERIE-FRANCOIS STORY
Elegant and intelligent, Trierweiler, who has three teenage sons from her previous marriage to a colleague at the magazine Paris Match, is 10 years younger than the 57-year-old Hollande. She met Hollande years ago while covering the Socialist Party, which he headed for 11 years until 2008.
Their relationship flowered starting in 2005 as Hollande's then-partner Royal was beginning to prepare her own presidential candidacy.
Hollande and Royal maintained a pact of silence about their crumbling relationship — broken only after she lost to Sarkozy in 2007. Royal then announced that she had asked Hollande to leave their family home.
Royal, who soldiered through Hollande's presidential campaign with occasional appearances, now wants a piece of the political pie — as speaker of the lower house of parliament should the Socialists win June legislative elections.
As for Trierweiler, she cheered Hollande on at rallies but also kept an office at the Socialists' campaign headquarters, assuring she was never far from earshot.
And on Tuesday, she let journalists waiting outside the couple's Paris apartment know who's in charge with a Tweet: "I thank my colleagues for respecting our private life and that of our neighbors. Please don't camp in front of our home."Retro Jordan Shoes
Some political enemies of Hollande threw darts, with a lawmaker in Sarkozy's conservative UMP party comparing Trierweiler to a Rottweiler.
"All these attacks, one is lower than the next," the incoming first lady lamented on Radio Hollande, a station set up as part of his presidential campaign.
UNWED AT THE ELYSEE
Some mundane problems will need to be resolved, namely where the first couple will reside. Eschewing tradition — and the Elysee Palace — they want to remain in their own apartment, located in a busy Paris neighborhood and said to be a security nightmare.
And how will their unwed status play to the crowd of official visitors or when traveling abroad, particularly to countries sensitive about male-female ties outside wedlock?
Will they simply break down and get married?
"This isn't something you do under the pretext that you're going to be president," Hollande said in an interview with the magazine Elle. "The decision is ours."
Trierweiler wants to keep working even though she has been booted from her job as a political reporter to avoid conflict of interest.
"Even if my press card is withdrawn, I will die a journalist. It's in my soul," she told Radio Hollande.
In her new role, she is walking through the other side of the looking glass, and she knows it.
"This role makes me a little uncomfortable, but I will manage very well if it is not limited just to that. I want to represent the image of France, do the necessary smiling, be well-dressed, but it shouldn't stop there. I will not be a trophy wife," she told The Times of London.
CARLA'S LEGACY
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy suffered legions of tasteless jokes about why she hooked up with Sarkozy — and more tasteless Tweets this week about whether she'll leave him now that he's out of power.
And she too struggled against the image of the trophy wife, according to Robb Young, author of "Power Dressing: First Ladies, Women Politicians and Fashion."
"On the world stage, of course, Carla outshone many of her first lady peers at the time, but this was more to do with the star power she accumulated during her years in the fashion industry and the natural charisma that no doubt helped to elevate her to supermodel status in the first place," he wrote in an email.
"What she spent most of her time as first lady trying to do — in terms of her style at least — was to downplay her inherent glamour quotient, detract from her beauty and whitewash some of her past by choosing rather demure and sometimes downright prim yet stately outfits," he said.
He noted that Bruni-Sarkozy had a career and world-famous name before ever marrying Sarkozy, and she has a foundation working to fight AIDS and other diseases.
"She will always be remembered for many more things than her comparatively brief career at the Elysee Palace," Young said.Nike Air Jordan Shoes
